INTRODUCTION

The fashion in the 1990s changed direction from the oversized shoulder pads and bright prints of the 1980s.

From the grunge movement to the minimalistic approach, Fashion in that

decade shaped and influenced how both men and women dressed.

MINIMALISTIC & CONCEPTUAL FASHION 

  In the 1990s, Antifashion designers grabbed the attention of the indurstry by creating collection with more neutral color palettes. There was an intellectual approach to fashion where minimal structure was intentionally designed to be simple, yet fashionable.

1995 Fall/ Winter Collection by Calvin Klein designed gray fashionable pieces with cashmere knits, wool coats and shift dresses.

Helmut Lang 1999 Fall/Winter collection featured silk organza layered over jersey stretch fabrics. 

Ann Demelemeesters created a collected for her 1997 Spring/Summer collection that displayed classic tailored peieces that elongated the body with wide hem and loose fitted jackets.

Tom Ford became the creative director for the House of Gucci in the mid 90s and he released one of most beloved collections featuring slinky fitted dresses and luxurius silk blouses paired with trousers for his 1996 Spring Collection. 

GRUNGE & VINTAGE FASHION

Grunge fashion ironically became mainstream in the 1990s. The idea of grunge was to dress down and go against the aesthetic & beauty of popular fashion trends. Thrift shopping for vintage clothes inspired the young teens of the generation to explore their own fashion sense without paying for designer prices.

Perry Ellis designed by Marc Jacobs, picked up the mainstream grunge trends and presented his 1993 Spring collection with mixed plaids, florals and neutrals.

Anna Sui’s 1993 Spring collection was one of the most notable fashion shows to feature the grunge trend of the decade. From rainbow striped prints to butterfly motifs , the quintessential 90s look to dress casually, but with freedom to dress up or down. 

MEN’S FASHION : RELAXED FIT

The men’s fashion in the 1990s slowly transitioned from the oversized trends that was widely popular in the 1980s. Suits were designed with a relaxed fit, however with various designers presented men’s fashion that gravitate towards androgyny, minimalistic design and more modern approaches towards the end of the 1990s.

Fashion for men became more casual in style. 

From loose fitted jackets, acid wash jeans and dark neutral colors.

1990’s Designer Fashion

The movement of 1990s fashion was heavily influenced by the designer and collections they released each season. 

Chanel 90s

Chanel in the 1990’s was idolized for the colorful tweed suits modernised by Karl Lagerfeld. 

Vivienne Westwood, known as the Queen of Punk Style, reinvented her brand in the 1990s. She mixed modern pieces with corsets, following trends of vintage fashion.

Miuccia Prada revolutionized the concept of fashion in the 1990s. She created pieces that were aeesthetcially unsual, and made them beautiful. She was known for influencing the term “Ugly Chic.” 

As we get to know our history, we see that fashion will come back in full circle with what influences the public, how we change our style and learn to break free from tradition.
