From using leftover fabric to restyling a garment, it’s possible to be eco-friendly with your clothes. Sustainable fashion is an eco-friendly approach to designing, manufacturing and consuming clothing as way to reduce the harm to our environment. It’s also a method to preserve clothing using recycled materials in order to reduce waste. With the technological advances in the 1950s, mass manufacturing increased and resulted in overproduction of clothes over time.
At Luxtailor, we follow sustainable methods of not only mending & altering clothing, reviving client’s beloved garments, we also reuse and upcycle materials.
We had a pleasure of meeting Kate McGuire the Founder of Converted Closet. The mission of Converted Closet is to create sustainable fashion by finding vintage pieces and modernize them.
We had an opportunity to be part of one of Kate’s projects where she transformed an old cape by relining it with a fabulous textile that she found as leftover from an interior designer project and replacing the binding with leather.
Here are the exclusive behind the scenes from our studio.

The tailor replaced the original lining with a print upholstery fabric that was used from leftover scraps of curtains.
The idea of the cape design was to make the cape to be worn as Reversible.
Alterations included adding fusible to the fabric to balance the weight of the lining. Using the original fabric as the pattern to trace the body of the cape and hood.
In addition to replacing the lining, the binding along the front closure, pockets and closure loop were upgraded to a beautiful brown leather that is a perfect contrast to the canary yellow fabric.
It modernizes the overall look of the cape and we were thrilled to present the end result to Kate.
We were lucky to be featured on Kate’s IGTV special featuring the behind the process of how she transformed her beautiful cape.
